[LIST] 10 Things Nigerians Expect From President Buhari In 2016

Buhari-in-us-e1443563508581.jpgThe last 6 months of 2015 was seen by the APC as a way to test and study the system very well. Although, the presidency announced its team very late but Nigerians believe that in 2016, President Mohammadu Buhari must hit the ground running from Day one and are expecting major changes to come soon.
As Nigerians enter the New Year with hope for their general state of being to get better, here is a list of 10 things most citizens expect from the Federal Government in 2016.
They are:
1. Defeat Boko Haram completely, and not technically
During the campaign for the presidential polls, the All Progressives Congress gallantly promised Nigerians to defeat and vanquish the dangerous Boko Haram sect in no time if elected into the Aso Villa.
As the year cascaded to a close, the Federal Government claimed technical victory over the terrorists prompting fresh attacks on Borno and Adamawa states, by the insurgents.
In 2016, Nigerians desperately hope that the Federal Government would literally defeat the Boko Haram menace in totality and not technically.
2. Begin payment of N5,000 allowance to unemployed youths
Another promise made by the All Progressives Congress which is yet to be delivered to Nigerians is the payment of a monthly allowance of N5,000 to unemployed youths across the country.
Since getting into the power, the feasibility of the payment plan has been discussed extensively with the government sometimes giving reasons why it cannot cover all unemployed youths.
The payment is meant to commence in January 2016, according to some members of the Buhari cabinet, and Nigerians are hoping and expecting the government to fulfill this particular promise.
3. Save the failing Naira
The Nigerian currency continues to struggle in the international market, falling as low as N265 to a dollar in December.
The government has effected different measures to ensure that the Naira regains its value even as investors are set to pull out of the nation due to the Naira’s loss of value.
The fall has also affected the import and export market greatly leading to a likely economic crunch and inflation in the country.
The Federal Government would do well by Nigerians to initiate policies that save the failing Naira and resuscitate the nation’s currency.
4. The President cuts the frequency of his travels
In 2015, President Buhari frequently made trip across the world at state expense, some of which some people have described as unnecessary considering the myriads of challenges the country is facing.
5. Good Roads Network
Federal highways in the country are in a bad state and Nigerians have shown hope in the leadership of Babatude Fashola to find lasting solution to the deplorable state.
6. Employment Opportunities
Job creation is among the cardinal promise of President Mohammadu Buhari and Nigerians will be happy if the government of the day can create more jobs for the teeming youths population
7. Fuel Stability and Availability
The oil sector is one major setback of the every government and if the Buhari led team can find lasting solution to this, Nigerians will shower praises on him.
8. Improved and Stable Electricity
Stable and constant electricity supply is another problem facing Nigeria and Nigerians. When there is Stable power supply, Industries will strive, there willl be employment opportunities and the economy will surely grow.
9. Reform in the Education Sector
Nigeria’s educational sector is epileptic, starting from the tertiary, secondary and even primary level, the system hardly works.
The Universal Basic Education (UBE) scheme which makes primary education up to junior secondary school compulsory and free for all Nigerian school age children is suffering from inadequate funding and poor implementation in most parts of the country.
Incessant strike activities which usualy paralysed the sector for months have to stop and there is need for proper overhauling of the sector.
10. Drastic Reduction in Corruption
Corruption is said to be a cankerworm which has eaten deeply into the Nigerian system though president Buhari has promised to take it as a serious issue in the change mantra. Nigerians await several court cases to see if someone will be nailed at the end of the day for corruption related offences.

Tanko Yakassai Lists Northern Elders He Shared Anenih's N53million With

yakassi.jpgTanko Yakassai, former Special Assistant to former President Shehu Shagari, on Tuesday told VANGUARD that he and 8 other prominent Northern leaders received N53 million from former PDP board of trustee Chairman, Tony Anenih

Tony Anenih in a letter to EFCC stated that he collected N260 million from the office of the former National Security Adviser Sambo Dasuki and gave N53 million to Tanko Yakasai's group.

Speaking to newsmen, Yakassai said, ''Yes, myself and 8 others collected N53m from chief Tony Anenih to pay advocacy visit to prominent northern emirs to mobilize their subjects for a hitch free 2015 general elections. I want to make it abundantly clear that I didn’t receive money from Chief Anenih in my private capacity as Tanko Yakasai but to a patriotic individuals who are interested in the peaceful coexistence of the polity''.

Those who benefited from the N53million include: former minister of state, foreign Affairs, Alhaji Mamman Anka, Barrister Bitrus Gwada and Alhaji Suleiman Lawal, Dr Bahago, Chief John Macklink from Plateau, and Senator Sodangi are beneficiaries of the N53 million. Arms Deal Probe: APC is Biting the Hands That Fed it - Raymond Dokpesi

Founder of DAAR Communications, Raymond Dokpesi, has accused FG of vilifying members of the opposition party. According to him, the probe of the abuse of security funds under the last administration is a clear witch hung.

He alleged that the current administration was taking Nigeria back to the era of dictatorship but vowed that his party would fight what he described as injustice, till the very end.

Dokpesi is currently being prosecuted for allegedly receiving N2.1 billion from the office of the national security adviser (NSA) for the media campaign of the PDP,.

Dasuki spoke in Abuja after his investiture as the patron of the PDP Youth Vanguard and honour as ‘the freedom fighter of PDP’ on Wednesday.

“So much political water has passed under the bridge since the general election of April 2015, so much have been said about our members, many of whom have been publicly vilified even without being heard,” he said.

“In the 16 years in power, it brought about major reforms in the economy, communication, technology and business which has today made Nigeria the biggest economy in Africa.

“The democratic freedom upon which the now ruling party rode to power is made possible by PDP government, which ensured fundamental human right of citizens to freely express themselves were guaranteed, even at the expense of its existence as the then ruling party.

“Legislation like freedom of information act are realities of the PDP government. And I dare say that even the EFCC, the ICPC, and all the agencies that are today said to be dealing with issues of corruption were brought in place by PDP government.

“I speak in regard to the several matters before the law court of our country concerning PDP members and especially my humble self on charges filed against us by the federal government.

“The provisions of section 287 of the constitution are very clear on the obedience of court orders by all arms of government.

“Having said so, I must assure you that there is nothing like the much flaunted $2.1 billion dollars arms deal, it does not exist. It’s a figment of the imagination of the current administration in an attempt to disseminate, misinform, destroy the very root of the PDP and you must stand, each and every one of you must stand for the Peoples Democratic Party.

“I have unshakeable faith that the youth are not just the future but the present of our dear country Nigeria, and must be active if the heart-felt democracy is to be sustained and protected.”

He added that the PDP would not go into extinction as a result of its current challenges.

“As I have said not too long ago we must stand resolutely united especially in the face of this momentary political adversity, for one thing I want to say again that the PDP is not dead, that the PDP is not dying, and the PDP will not die,” he said.

Dokpesi’s outburst is coming a day after his son, who is chairman of DAAR Communications, led top management staff of the organisation to the presidential villa to present a giant seasonal card to President Muhammadu Buhari.

EFCC Knows Where I Live - Soyinka Reacts to Rivers govt’s Call for His Probe Over N82m Dinner

Soyinka.jpgNobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has responded to claims by the Rivers State government that former governor, Rotimi Amaechi, spent N82 million to organize a dinner in his honour.
A statement issued by Soyinka on Wednesday evening read, ''This morning, I saw only the headlines in one or two print media regarding the 80th Birthday dinner to which I was hosted by the former governor of Rivers State, the Honorable Rotimi Amaechi, now Minister of Aviation,” said Mr. Soyinka.
“I ignored them. It was not, and remains not my business to probe into the catering and logistical implications of the hundreds of institutions and governments all over the world to whom I acknowledge an immense debt of unsolicited recognition over the years.
“Since then however, I have learnt of some unsavory statements by the insecure incumbent of the Rivers State government Lodge. These included a loose invitation to anti-crime agencies to investigate the potential crime of being honoured through any occasion.”
“Those words were: Corruption strikes back. In this ongoing instance, that expression translates most vividly as ‘Those who are neck deep in the sewage of corruption ensure that they splatter sewage in all possible and improbable directions.’

“I do however fully support the Wikeleaks call for multi-directional probes. I recommend further that he involve the services of INTERPOL to guarantee its extension to all international organisations and governments to whom I owe uncountable events of recognition – including birthday luncheons, dinners, cultural receptions and events of real, fictitious, or simply opportunistic flavoring – to which I have submitted myself.
“The descent to this present level of abominable distractions makes one truly despair. It is one that even I did not envisage when I warned – corruption strikes back.
“Whether it brings honour or dishonour to the nation is another matter – I am saddened, but indifferent.
“EFCC and company – over to you. You all know where I live.”

Read What Lai Mohammed Said About Olisa Metuh's Arrest

Lai Mohammed.jpgNigeria's Minister of Information and Culture, Mr Lai Mohammed, on Wednesday reacted to the arrest of Olisa Metuh, National publicity secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
According to CHANNELS TV, the minister distanced President Muhammadu Buhari from the arrest. He said the President is not directly involved in the operations of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

“I think the first point to make is that this government is not micro-managing any of the anti-graft agencies. I know for a fact that they don’t contact the President or anybody before they do their job. I think the media also has to do more than they are doing right now, they should investigate these allegations and also make their independent judgment about it.

“Honestly, if the EFCC or ICPC says that they are able to trace certain amount of money to my account, I don’t want you to believe it, I want you to also ask for proof; do your investigation.
“I can assure you that this government, no functionary in government micromanages or directs the EFCC or ICPC on who to arrest and who not to arrest”, he said.

READ: Full Text of Saraki’s Speech During IMF Chief’s Visit

senate IMF.jpgThis is the full text of Nigeria's Senate President, Olubukola Saraki during meeting with the Managing Director of International Monetary Fund, Madame Christine Lagarde with principal officers of the National Assembly yesterday, in Abuja.

Read:

ADDRESS BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE SENATE AND CHAIRMAN OF THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY, HIS EXCELLENCY, SENATOR (DR.) ABUBAKAR BUKOLA SARAKI TO THE MEETING WITH THE PRINCIPAL OFFICERS OF THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY ON THE VISIT OF MADAME CHRISTINE LAGARDE, MANAGING DIRECTOR, INTERNATIONAL MONETARY FUND, (IMF) ON 06 JANUARY, 2016.

Protocol:

Your Excellency, on behalf of my Distinguished and Honourable colleagues, I warmly welcome you and your entourage to the National Assembly. Your historic visit today, is a testament of the importance you attach to the role of the legislature in the attainment of economic development policies.

Your Excellency, your visit in this New Year is very auspicious as we begin to deliberate on the 2016 Appropriation Bill as the world economy rebalances in response to falling commodity prices, in particular oil.

Your Excellency, this National Assembly congratulates you and appreciates the new IMF recognition of the pivotal role parliamentarians could play in forging sustainable development policies for the attainment of the IMF mandate. To me this is critical to minimizing the erroneous perception on IMF policy prescriptions and conditionalities that have been entrenched over the years especially in Africa.

This, I believe, is vital to the success of the Fund’s policies and programmes not only now but also in the future. As legislators, we play an important role in making our people understand IMF advice, policy trade-offs, consultations and other engagements, so that ownership, transparency and accountability are brought to bear in economic policy choices.

Since the year 2000 when the IMF/World Bank Group founded the Parliamentary Network which is an independent, non-governmental organisation, participation in the programmes has been on the rise by legislators from all over the World. We commend the initiative. This outreach to legislators is a win-win situation since one of the objectives is to familiarize the legislators with the rationale behind the IMF advisory.

We recommend that IMF should further strengthen this network as a veritable tool towards greater convergence of understanding and engagement.

Here at home, the effect of the low oil prices on government revenue is challenging us to think out of the box in funding the repair of infrastructure, boosting employment, and securing our borders and people. These are no mean tasks and we welcome the support of our friends in this trying period.

Our economic fundamentals remain robust and the economy is resilient to absorb the current oil price shock. The situation is bringing out the entrepreneurship in us. Our private sector is also rising to the challenge. We assure you we will use this occasion to build a new economy diversified away from the perennial effects of oil price shocks.

The 8th National Assembly will provide the legislative leadership in ensuring a conducive environment for business to thrive.

The Nigerian legislature strongly believes that having a collaborative working relationship with the Executive Branch of government brings development closer to the people. Since the advent of the new administration, we have worked closely to stabilize the economy and steady the fiscal environment. This, we have indeed demonstrated by the speedy passage of the Medium Term Expenditure Frame Work (MTEF) and recently in the postponement of our recess in order to receive President Muhammadu Buhari to present the 2016 Appropriation Bill. We have also set in motion activities towards reforming our oil and gas industry through legislative initiatives in order to meet international best practices.

Engaging with our people the issues we strongly made here of FOREX – to do business.
This is expected – what IMF can do to bridge the gap.
CBN to advise open – allow Forex
(ii) No devaluation.
(iii) Loans to SMEs – bring interest to CBN
(iv) Technical assistance
(v) Support policies.

The 8th Senate Legislative Agenda is of particular interest in Parliamentary Network initiative which brings together parliamentarians and representatives of private sector as well as civil society organisations to discuss how to improve the environment for doing business in the developing world and how countries can increase their ranking in publications such as “Doing Business Report”.

The purpose of our Legislative Agenda is to enable us focus our lawmaking in areas that will help create jobs, expand our infrastructure base and make our economy work for the benefit and happiness of the majority of our people. Pivotal to the attainment of this overarching objective is the state of the Nigerian business environment. In collaboration with major stakeholders, the 8th Senate is presently signing a memorandum of understanding on “The Enhancing Nigerian Advocacy for Better Business Environment Project,” a National Assembly business and investment round-table initiative, with developmental organizations.

These roundtables will provide opportunity to the private sector to work closely with the legislature in developing friendly-business environment.

The initiative will commence with a review of institutional, regulatory and legal instruments currently becoming impediments and bottlenecks to doing business in Nigeria.

Your Excellency, Distinguished and Honourable colleagues, in closing, I want you to take away these messages:

Legislature/Executive Collaboration on the Economy:

The National Assembly is committed to working closely with the Executive arm in addressing the challenges facing the Nigerian economy. This is the position on both sides of the aisle;

Diversifying and Modernizing Our Economy:
We will support the Executive with legislation where necessary to give confidence to investors.

Blocking Revenue Leakages:
We are assiduously working towards blocking identified legal loopholes on revenue leakages and expanding our tax base;

Conducive Business Environment:
We are giving priority to legislation aimed at providing a more conducive business environment in general and reducing the cost of doing business in Nigeria; and

Ending Impunity and Reducing Corruption: The National Assembly more than ever before, is working at improving its oversight systems to expose corruption wherever it may be, and providing better legal frameworks to entrench the rule of law and end impunity.

The global economy is currently well interconnected. With our economic weight in our sub-region, a well functioning Nigerian economy provides a strong pillar to its growth. We therefore, implore the international community and financial institutions to partner with us in supporting our economic development aspirations.

On this note, Your Excellency, we welcome you once again to our beautiful city and wish you the Season’s Greetings.

Bienvenue!

PRESIDENT OF THE SENATE

N82million Was Spent on Soyinka's Dinner -Amaechi Reacts

Rotimi Amaechi.jpgRotimi Amaechi, former Governor of Rivers state has reacted to allegations by the state Governor that he spent N82million to host Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka to a dinner in the state when he was in office.

In a statement released by his media aide David Iyofor, Amaechi said, ''Wike must stop these silly distractions. Rivers people are not interested in his lies and witch-hunt. Rather, Rivers people want to know what will happen to their children that he stopped and cancelled the funding of their scholarships abroad. Rivers people want to know why the Rivers State Sustainable Development Agency (RSSDA), an agency setup by law is no longer functioning under Wike?.

''Why instead of quality education, a standard set by his predecessor, under Wike, grasses and weeds have taken over the beautiful schools built by Amaechi? Rivers people want to know why the standard health facilities and services put in place by the Amaechi administration are rotting away, not this petty rambling. Rivers people want to know why the Wike government does not care about the security of their lives and property, as violence and criminals have taken over. Rivers people want to know why it feels as if there is no government in Rivers State, and this is in spite of the billions of naira that has accrued to the Wike administration and the tens of billions of naira borrowed.”

IMF's Visit: Jimoh Ibrahim Warns Buhari To Learn From IBB's Pitfall

ImFLArgeagde.jpg

The Group Managing Director, Energy Group, Jimoh Ibrahim has warned President Muhammadu Buhari to beware of dealing with IMF, describing visitation as an economic bait that will do Nigeria no good.

According to Ibrahim, the visit of IMF’s Managing Director, Christine Lagarde is a means of campaigning for economic conditionalities even at a time when Nigeria, like some oil producing countries, needs assistance and support to continue to put into implementation government policies.
